Environment and Ecology

We and the Nature

"Human use, population, and technology have reached that certain stage where Mother Earth no longer accepts our presence with silence."
H.H Dalai Lama XIV

Environment is defined as a condition or surroundings in which people live or work. Ecology is the external surroundings in which a plant or animal lives which tend to influence its development and behavior. Together these make the very essence of Nature. Human evolution has taken 2.5 billion years to evolve to its current state. Man first learnt to fear the forces of Nature- Fire, Water, weather and animals. He then learnt to understand, co - exist and then use these forces. With time he tried to command the powers of Nature.

We need the environment more than the environment needs us

This wonderful quote tells us the worth of our environment. But is environment, so precious according to all of us? Recent case study regarding "bio diversity – a threat or an opportunity" proves that due various reasons the average temperature on the Earth's surface is getting hotter, and humans are contributing measurable changes in the global climate. On the world environment day, the theme was "Raise your voice, not the sea level". It talks about raising our voice not the environmental pollution.

People say, to a scientist nature has been a puzzle and a challenge to man who has tried to read its mysteries and solve its riddles. To a philosopher, nature has been an unfailing source of inspiration, the presence of God & the divine spirit radiates through its beauty.

But for me, it's the transparency in appearance. Nature is something extremely pure and beautiful with no hidden facades. It’s an experience which gives me a feeling of completeness, serenity and glimpse of creator of the World.

Environmental Psychology for wellbeing of people

As per the Oxford dictionary, psychology means the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.

So, psychology is the scientific study of behavior and the mind. This definition contains three elements. The first is that psychology is a scientific field of study, which obtains knowledge through systematic and objective methods of observation and experimentation. Second is that the psychologists study behavior, which refers to any response or reaction to a situation or stimulus that can be observed and measured- for example, responding nicely and cleverly or reacting with raised voice volume and anger to some speech or action. Third is that psychologists also study the mind, which refers to conscious, preconscious and subconscious or unconscious mental states. These states cannot actually be seen, but only be inferred from the visible and variable patterns of speech, actions and behavior.

Environment, We and God

Today, we live in a world where there is a growing awareness towards the care and protection of environment. Environment is most often perceived other than human beings, as if both human beings and environment have their own distinct existence and extinction. Is that true?

What is environment? How do we understand it? People of various walks of life and academic pursuits try to define and articulate ‘environment’ in the best way suit to them. But I want to reflect about it in my own way after being with and caring for the Mother Earth closely for the last 12 years…

Environment I can barely spell right and Ecology I simply do not understand

With my most cherished and simple yet endearing upbringing in the green settings of the state of Orissa I just figured out this one quite perfectly….."Green is good, and being surrounded by green is equally good."

This was my first untutored lesson in anything to do with Environment & Ecology -E&E. And sure enough, I lamented more often than once – spelling out one word was a hellish exercise with dismal results, and thanks to biology a subject at school, the second word passed the spelling test but simply never made any sense. Back then, that is…and we are in 'now' – a totally different timeline.
